Matta Ghaly - Pastor
The Reverend Matta Ghaly (they/them) is a rostered minister in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, currently serving as the pastor of Mt. Carmel Lutheran Church, as well as the Candidacy Director for the Oregon Synod. After studying process-oriented psychology, Pastor Matta completed a Master of Divinity at Luther Seminary and a Master of Arts in Systematic Theology at the Graduate Theological Union. They are currently pursuing a Doctorate in Ministry, developing a trauma-informed, somatically-based process of contemplative formation for congregations, activists, and religious professionals. In their ministry, Pastor Matta aspires to be heart-centered, attuned to the body's wisdom, and grounded in cultural humility.
Steve Cleveland - Musician
Steve Cleveland (he/him) is a musician and poet living in Portland, Oregon. In addition to being Mt. Carmel's pianist extraordinaire, he also organizes the community's monthly jazz services. Steve plays piano and accordion with an eclectic array of groups including: The Sportin' Lifers, Johnnie Ward and the Sharkskin Revue, Hot Club of Hawthorne, Indalo Wind and The Hot Club Time Machine. He has served as Music Director for "Alan's Confectionary," and "Homeless (the Musical)," both by Alan Alexander III. You can checkout Steve's music or contact him through his website.


Courtney Hermann - Council President
Courtney Hermann (she/her) is an Assistant Professor of Film at Portland State University, an independent documentary filmmaker, and media producer. She is a life-long Lutheran whose faith is inspired by the memory of her grandmothers and great aunt. Courtney strives to align her work as a teacher and documentary filmmaker with the words and teachings of Jesus, which call us to seek justice and to love one another.
Jeannette King - Council Vice-President
Jeannette King (she/her) is a Legal Assistant Manager at a fast-paced litigation law firm in Portland, where her goal is to empower others to achieve their personal best in a strong team environment. Her faith and family have always been a key part of Jeannette’s life. As part of her commitment to follow Jesus and proclaim the good news of the gospel, she aspires to make the world a better place, spreading as much joy and love around as she is able.
